You all asked great questions and contributed with examples!  I am very happy with everyone's class participation!

Homework:
Look over the definitions and examples from today and make sure you commit them to your understanding.

Looking Ahead:
Tomorrow we will be starting our first writing assignment!  Come prepared with paper and pen and your novel!

Review Characterization Chart and Some More Definitions

Today we reviewed the Characterization Chart and discussed the physical and personal traits of the various characters in The Outsiders.  Afterward I had you give my feedback (thumbs up, thumbs down) if our discussion helped you understand physical/personal traits.  Only a few had their thumbs down.  If that was you, I asked you to either talk with me or a friend who understands it better.  Remember: we want to develop into INDEPENDENT learners.  Be aware of your mistakes and get help for them!!  You know I am available whenever you need me!

Next you took down new definitions from our literature book:

  • plot
  • exposition
  • rising action
  • climax
  • falling action (resolution, denouement)
  • setting
  • theme
  • conflict (external, internal)
  • denotation
  • connotation
  • protagonist
  • antagonist
Tomorrow we will discuss these definitions and apply them to The Outsiders!

Homework:
Read over your definitions to familiarize yourself with them!

Outsiders quiz and Characterization Chart

Today we accomplished the following things:

  1. A comprehension quiz on The Outsiders
  2. Corrected the quiz (You had a chance to see your score!)
  3. Discussed the definitions from Friday
  4. Began the Characterization Chart
Homework:
Finish the characterization chart for tomorrow.  You must have a 2 & 3 for everyone's personal and physical traits.  You may NOT use a synonym for 2 & 3.  I will attach the chart to our edline page.

Characters/Characterization

Today in class you handed in your syllabus for 10 points.  If you forgot, MAKE SURE you turn it in Monday for 6 points.  After Monday it will be a zero!

Next we opened out literature books to definitions for Character and Characterization.  You took notes on these in your notebooks.

Finally, I reminded you of the Outsiders comprehension test on Monday.  I gave you a (wink, wink) about the possibility of extra credit from the notes.

Homework:
Brief yourself on The Outsiders if you have forgotten the book.
Study your notes

Looking Ahead:
Next week we will discuss characters/characterization as well as other parts of the novel.

Syllabus and Supplies for Literature

Today we discussed the syllabus.  Remember the lesson: "Never sign anything before you have 1) read it 2) completely understand it.  Make sure you read/explain it your parents tonight and have them sign it.

We also discussed a supply list.  I told you what I would use if I were you:

  • (1) 2 subject notebook with perforated pages (notes in the front, loose leaf in the back)***
  • 1 highlighter
  • 1 folder to keep work
  • blue or black pen to write with for class work (NO FLORESCENT COLORS!!)
  • 1 red or green or purple pen to check with (NO FLORESCENT COLORS!!)
***for the notebook, I am flexible.  It does not have to be a "2 subject".  If you want, you can have a binder of loose leaf with a notebook in the back.  The main thing I definitely want is a notebook for all your notes; no loose leaf for your notes!

Homework and Looking Ahead:
  • Bring in the syllabus signed by you AND your parents!
  • Bring your Outsiders book tomorrow.  We will discuss characterization.  Make sure you have your notebook for notes too!!

Welcome Back!

Can you believe summer is really over?  Reality is setting in and now we have to get back to the books!  I am looking forward to a year of knowledge and fun!!

Just to reiterate what we briefly went over today:

  1. No electronic devices---this includes Kindles, Nooks or any other electronic readers; you will have to purchase the hardcover copies of your novels!
  2. Sign up for Edline!  Please make sure you have your own account.  And make sure your parents have their own account.  Both of you should select to receive emails!  This is a big way I and other teachers communicate with you!
  3. See you at the Welcome Tailgate tonight.  I am excited to get to know you and your families.  Call me over so we can chat.
  4. You will have a short Outsiders quiz on Monday.  If you have not read the book or if you forget parts, REREAD!!
See you later tonight!
